Chapter Thirteen

Sure, why not? he asked himself as he walked back to the cottage. Why not create yet another excuse for self-torture? Either he was going to have to watch as she rubbed the lotion into her own beautifully smooth skin or he was going to kill himself touching her without touching her. Every minute he had to watch her through the viewfinder of his camera was another minute spent in purgatory. He didn’t know how much longer he could keep up the pretence. All he knew for certain? It was time to step it up a notch and apply some gentle pressure. If he could discover what it was she kept from him then he could decide how to proceed. The sooner the better.

The growling of his stomach reminded him how late it was getting. After the long drive and then an afternoon teasing himself, the day had flown by.

It was going to be on the hell side of impossible to sit there on the beach with her and make nice while she wore next to nothing. Other than the thin scrap of lycra, she was naked.

Sam went inside the house in search of sunscreen but then remembered he hadn’t actually brought any with him. He didn’t burn thanks to his German heritage and hadn’t used the stuff in years. Not that he got out of the office enough to stand in the sun.

He veered off in the direction of the bedroom Alison had chosen for the night. Her overnight bag was on the bed along with the dress she’d changed out of and her handbag. A beeping sound caught his attention. In the same moment he knew he shouldn’t, he knew he would. Rifling women’s handbags was so far up on the list of no-nos, along with trusting models and thinking about his childhood. So far it was the week for bending the rules.

Opening the top of her black bag, Sam saw the white phone and the light flashing. He swiped a finger across the screen and opened the message waiting there.

You had better be coming back from wherever it is you went. You now have six days to get my money. I will be watching your house for your return.

He pressed the home button and then locked the screen again and put the phone back where he’d found it. So she was in it just for the money. Suddenly the light around her image dimmed in his mind slightly.

Part of him reasoned she wouldn’t have taken the job unless she needed the money for something or other. But she owed that money to someone. Someone who sounded quite serious about getting it. Sam wondered just how much trouble she was in. Sam wondered how much choice she had about taking his job and being there with him.

It would explain her eagerness to know if she was successful at the interview. It would also explain her mixed signals and vulnerability one moment and fearlessness the next. One thing was obvious, she didn’t want him to know about it.
